We are all indigenous to this Earth. And the truth is, most of our lineage has been erased from history, and replaced by just a small portion of who we truly are. All throughout Europe, tribal people were massacred by the Romans, and their stories not told. We have forgotten who we are. Many of us are attracted and called to Tribal ways, Tribal wisdom, and a way of walking on this Earth with respect and love. We are women who walk with white skin and European descent, who are willing, and wanting to do the work to rediscover our own Tribal lineages. Many of us have been celebrating and honoring the indigenous ceremonies of the land we walk on now, in the Americas. And we also are aware that this can cause more harm. Appropriation of 1st Nation's ceremonies on this land is something that we are aware of, wanting to stop, and decolonize. One of the ways we see doing this is to do the work to find our own people, our own traditions, our own ancestors. Then, we can come to ceremony and share- even if it is one song, one dance, one prayer- then we are moving out of taking, and into sharing. And it seems a good place to start is to travel to these lands to pray to the ancestors there for guidance as we embark on this quest to re-member. This also connects us to our ancestors and the ones who came before us. For me, it is honoring the dead, and the tribal peoples of the land where many of us came from. It is going to take some work, some research, some deep digging to find these answers. And we have the resources to do this, and many of us believe it is our responsibility..
November 8-13th Italy
We will be staying in the town of Sabina, which is home to the tribe of the Sabine people. It was the raping of the Sabine women that began the Roman Empire, it is here where our journey will begin....
We will be going to the ancient burial mounds, and sacred sites to pray to the ancestors there. We will go to Rome, to hold a healing ceremony outside the Vatican, to pray for forgiveness to our ancestors for the onslaught of the tribal peoples of Italy. We will be in prayer and ceremony every day.
We will be staying in Sabina, Italy. Sabina is in Central Italy, about 35 miles from Rome. Sabina is home to the ancient Sabine people. Legend says that when Rome was founded, they needed women to continue their war based society. The story says that they abducted the women of Sabina and raped them, thus beginning the Roman Empire. This inception was only the beginning of a culture that dominated and decimated the people around them. It is here that we will begin...
Day 1: Meet for dinner at our rental house in Sabina Opening circle, fire ceremony, and calling in our intentions together
Day 2: Orvieto Underground City
Orvieto is an underground city that was once inhabited by the Etruscan people, and predates the Roman Empire. It is an opportunity to walk through an ancient site that is largely preserved to tune into the people that once lived here. Orvieto has over 1200 caves, grottos, tunnels, wells, and cisterns. We will travel here to get a glimpse into life of the ancestors of this land.
Day 3: Cerveteri: Etruscan Burial Sites
We will travel to the Etruscan Burial Sites in Cerveteri, where over 1000 tombs exist. Here we will pray to the ancestors, and ask them for guidance on our quest to remember the tribal lineage that has been buried. We will explore these places, with respect and reverence.
Day 4: Monteleone Sabino: Ancient Site of the Sabine People and Temple of Feronia
Monteleone is home to the ancient city of Trebula Mutuesca of the Sabine people. Here, still in tact, is an ancient amphitheater, and a temple dedicated to the Goddess Feronia. Feronia was the Goddess of fire and fertility to the ancient people. She was the original Liberty, and her temples are often in the wild. We will go to her temple to pray to her, to ask for her guidance, and to remember the deities who once were worshiped on this land. We will go to the amphitheater to drum and sing, and learn traditional songs of the people. We will end our day by visiting an old church, that bridges the symbolism of the ancient people with the Roman church.
Day 5: Rome- Temple of Feronia, and Forgiveness Prayer
We will end our trip with a day in Rome. We will start the day with a prayer at Feronia's ancient temple. From there we will travel to Vatican City and pray for forgiveness in St. Peter's Basilica. This is our healing- a way of acknowledgement to the attempted erasure of the tribal people, and the recognition that through forgiveness we can reclaim what has been lost. We are re-membering.
This itinerary is the bare bones of our time together. There will be space for what moves in us, and for what spirit is calling us to do. There will also be free time to journal, ground in, and rest.
